Listening to Your Music
Listening to your music as you write it is important. Your computer, whether PC or Mac, contains everything Pizzicato needs for listening to your music.
You don’t need external musical devices. No keyboards, no synths, no vsti’s, nothing.
The sound cards of today’s computers contain a musical synthesizer that Pizzicato will use to play back the notes and symbols of your score.
You may ask though, how can you specify the sounds or instruments you want? What about the volume of each one? How will Pizzicato transform the music notes and musical symbols of your score into the music you want to hear?
To make listening to your music easier, Pizzicato has a special window which helps you select the sound or instrument for each staff of your score. Additionally Pizzicato Professional includes an even easier way of doing this using a special window called Global View.
Additionally, the adjustments of volume, balance, vibrato, tempo, etc… give you full control over the sound produced, thus, helping you make your music more expressive.
Essentially, Pizzicato analyzes the notes and symbols of each measure, Pizzicato then calculates the notes to play with the correct rhythms with all the expression changes you have added and sends instructions to your sound card which then play’s the resulting music out your computer speakers.
All this means is that: you listen to your score on your computer!
At any moment, simply hit the spacebar of the computer keyboard and instantly Pizzicato plays the notes and symbols of the current measures. That easily you’re listening to your music!
Moreover, to make writing music easier, while you add or move the notes, you hear them immediately.
This makes it very easy to hear the results of your changes…
Or to test several possible options in a measure…
Or to make training yourself the correct notes in your music lessons faster….
Or to help you understand and play a difficult rhythmic section!
In short, we provide you with many different ways of accomplishing something musically, and you will be able to use them all.
However it is said a computer is cold, mechanical and without emotion. This goes against the heart of the musician, doesn’t it?
So how do you make the computer play your music back in a more human and expressive way?
You Are The Conductor!
What causes the expressive, emotion of a musical performance? What makes music have a soul?
You! The human being! You are the composer, with Pizzicato you can also be the Conductor!
To help you to more fully enjoy listening to your music, Pizzicato will perform all the notes and symbols you place on the score.
If you want a section louder, add a double forte, you want a section to quiet down over the course of a measure, add a decrescendo. Would you like the tempo to speed up during a section? Add an accelerando.
Pizzicato plays your music back just as you write it, by playing loudly, by decreasing the force and finally by accelerating.
If you add an accent to a note or a staccato or a legato? Pizzicato accentuates the note, detaches it or ties it.
And just like a conductor giving instructions to different sections or musicians, Pizzicato will treat each instrument with it’s own symbols only. All this is independent for each instrument.
And to hear all this while listening to your music, all you have to do is add the symbols to the score.
Pizzicato also makes it easy for you:
- To play and perform repeated sections,
- To modify the effect of each symbol independently (for example, the accent of the measures 3rd note must be a little stronger, or the crescendo must be more pronounced here than the other measures…)
- To add randomness (from a little to a lot) to the performance of the score. (This makes the playback sound much more human and “real”)
- To adjust the playing of each note separately for refining, with precision, a musical effect (for example these 3 notes should be played a bit earlier, this other passage must be played as if the notes were trailing…)
- To add various special effects (glissando, appoggiatura’s, or a “swing” effect,…)
- To create new graphic symbols and to assign them to sound effects integrated into your tool palettes.
Pizzicato does all this on your computer.
Without any external musical device!
You Orchestrate, Pizzicato Performs and you’re listening to your music!
“…Pizzicato will let you write music, just as on a sheet of paper. Here, the pencil is replaced by the mouse….The computer will play the score, performing the nuances, at the tempos wanted by the composer, without him doing anything else than writing them. It is a real musical home studio that the beginner, musician or the professional composer will discover without difficulty.”

For the more experienced composer or musician, listening to your music uses more than just the computer sound card. This, of course, brings up the question of Midi….
“I have been a consistent user of Pizzicato since 1996. I think that this software is very performing and above all it meets the needs of professional musicians.”
Alain Pierre – Guitarist and composer
